Centre 21.02 presents the first Women’s Hockey Summit

THE CENTER 21.02 PRESENTS THE FIRST WOMEN’S HOCKEY SUMMIT

Thursday, May 6, 2021 – In order to highlight women’s hockey and current challenges in the sport, Center 21.02 is preparing the first Women’s Hockey Summit, to be held Saturday, June 19. The Summit will bring together dedicated and passionate people involved in the game to draw up observations on the current state of the game for girls and women in Québec.

This first-ever Summit will be an opportunity to ask questions and listen to speakers share their experiences and ideas in order to provide, at the end of the exercise, a series of recommendations. There’s currently momentum, challenges and new opportunities opening up for women who want to get involved in sport, and we believe that the time has come to question the opportunities, supervision and services that are offered to young girls who want to play hockey throughout the province and in urban centers, from the recreational to the elite level.

This day aims to bring together passionate and dedicated members of the women’s hockey community. I would like to underline the leadership of Stéphanie Poirier of Meg Hewings who, for several weeks now, have been guiding a working group towards “putting into play” the first Summit presented by the Center 21.02. Let’s call for a higher and wider pyramid for our sport,” says Danièle Sauvageau, president of Center 21.02 and an ardent ambassador of women’s hockey.

Everyone involved in the Summit believes that women’s hockey deserves more recognition and support in order to maximize all the efforts of volunteers and players in the game, and in order to move the game forward. Due to the restrictions imposed by the pandemic, the event will be held virtually.

About the Centre 21.02

On February 21st, 2002, Canada won the Olympic gold medal in women’s hockey for the first time. For millions of girls and women, it was the beginning of a bigger dream. Founded in 2019, Centre 21.02 brings together the past and the present and is the only High Performance hockey Centre recognized by the competent authorities, namely Hockey Quebec, a member of Hockey Canada. Housed at the Verdun Auditorium in Montreal, the High Performance hockey Centre is a key partner in the long-term development effort of elite players who aspire to play for their national team and possibly within professional ranks.

In addition to its two founding partners BFL Canada and Sun Life, Centre 21.02 and its players benefit from the support of Geoff Molson of the Montreal Canadiens as well as several other strategic partners such as Hockey Québec, Hockey Canada, INS Quebec, Ville de Verdun (auditorium) and the City of Montréal.
